Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts Prove They Have the Right Stuff in National Rocket Competition

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep 05, 2011 - Seemingly in response to the nations call for more interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) activities – kids across the nation have competed in the fifth annual Reach for the Stars ~ National Rocket Competition. At the end of the Competition those who had the "Right Stuff"* were victorious.

Contestants had to build and launch a solid-fuel powered rocket at an event held in their area by schools, scouts, youth groups and Challenger Learning Centers. The closest average landing by parachute to a target after two launches wins. Local winner's results are entered into the national Competition. Of the six national winners – Three Girl Scouts; Nicole Frese, Mari Hernandez and Jo'nae McCullough and one Boy Scout, Collin Warner took top honors. Also scoring top honors were students; Marc Kolling and Mackie Tygart who competed with their classes at school. In a Competition that fosters the memory of the First Teacher in Space, Christa McAuliffe, it is fitting that Girl Scouts would win. Christa is considered to be a life long Girl Scout. Jo'nae McCullough competed with the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia at a STEM Summer Camp under Program Director, Cheryl Hecker. They were assisted by Tripoli Rocket Club members, Burl & Joanna Finkelstein. Nicole Frese won the honors with the Girl Scouts of Connecticut under Program Initiatives Coordinator, Ellyn Savard. Mari Hernandez launched with Membership Development Specialist, Patricia Hemenway of the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida. This is the second national win for Ms Hemenway and her Girl Scouts.

Collin Warner launched with his Boy Scout Troop in North Carolina under Scout Leader, Chad Warner. Representing the full spectrum of school students were; Marc Kolling from Laurel Elementary School, in Poinciana, Florida under teacher, Michael Bastedo and Assistant Principal, Shannon Young and Mackie Tygart who launched with his class at Berrien High School in Nashville, Georgia under Teacher Mark DiBois. Mr. DiBois is a National Association of Rocketry senior member and was honored last year for his work in the Helping Kids Reach for the Stars program.

Three of the winners (Marc Kolling, Jo'nae McCullough, Mari Hernandez) qualify to receive trophies and launch their rockets at the Astronaut Hall of Fame at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. They will continue their celebration with their families by visiting the Space Mirror Astronaut Memorial, standing in the world famous Rocket Garden, seeing an IMAX movie, riding the Shuttle Launch Experience and more.

Palm Coast, FL – Teens-In-Flight is proud to announce three new board members: Flagler County Sheriff Don Fleming, Flagler County School Board member Colleen Conklin, and retired Navy Seal James Nicola to the Teens-In-Flight board of directors.

Sheriff Don Fleming is a veteran law enforcement officer with more than thirty six years of extensive law enforcement experience. Sheriff Fleming is a Vietnam Veteran as well as an advisory board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Volusia-Flagler, Crime Stoppers of Volusia-Flagler, RSVP Flagler County and Executive Board member of the North Florida HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) Task Force.

Colleen Conklin is a member of the Flagler County School Board, District 2. She has served on the board for eight years. Colleen is a passionate child advocate and feels honored to serve such an outstanding group of education professionals in a county with such terrific kids and families.

James Nicola is a Navy Seal with multiple military and police commendations including Chief of Police awarded Life Saving Award. PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 29, 2011 - Bahamas Habitat (http://www.bahamashabitat.org) announced today its first response pilots are now delivering aid to numerous points in the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Irene. The organization moved quickly and had its first planes arriving on Friday August 26th shortly after the storm passed to the north.

The group has set up a main depot and coordination post at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE). Volunteers and pilots have come in from numerous points in the US and Bahamas. Planes were dispatched to deliver supplies and assess the damage and needs so the organization can direct the next wave of volunteer pilots according to the conditions they find on the ground in the various "Out Islands".

"We made our first flights on Friday as soon as it was safe to fly", said Cameron King, the organization's Aviation and Disaster Relief Coordinator. "One of our first stops was to Governor's Harbour on Eleuthera Island to deliver supplies and check on our staff and our base camp there. The organization is reaching out for donations of supplies, additional pilots with aircraft to join in the relief airlift, and online donations to allow the group to buy supplies to fill their volunteer aircraft.

But we don't always extend this thinking to the big celebrations in our lives. An average wedding, for example, can create a carbon footprint equivalent to 10 flights between Thailand and the UK, and any large gathering of human beings has the potential to result in similar environmental harm.

Your "event footprint" is not only about the quantity of harmful greenhouses gases that are released into the atmosphere, but about any environmental harm caused by your event. Additionally, it entails not only what you as the host do, but what your guests and vendors do as well. How many of your guests will be taking short-haul flights to get to the event?

Do all your vendors use recycled products when possible, and do they recycle their waste? To understand the environmental impact of your event, you need to consider much more than just what is going to occur at the event itself.

Many people believe that green alternatives are always going to expensive, but they don't have to be. In fact, thinking creatively to find eco-friendly alternatives could actually lead to savings. Here are some cheap ways to offset your event's carbon footprint.

StationeryEvents generally use a lot of paper in the form of invitations, save the date announcements, RSVP cards, posters, flyers, programs, place cards, menus and a variety of other items, depending on the nature of the event. However, in this digital age, a lot of that paper is an unnecessary expense. Save the date announcements and invitations can be sent by email, and you can give an email address or phone number for RSVPs, rather than a postal address. For public events, much of your advertising can be done digitally as well. Reduce the number of programs and only hand out one per couple or group.

Be creative in finding alternatives to paper. Instead of giving each guest or table a menu, use a large blackboard or notice board to display a single menu. Instead of place cards you could write or paint your guests' names on pretty pebbles, glasses, flowerpots or other items that can double as keepsakes.

DécorUse natural fabrics, such as organic cotton and bamboo, for your table arrangements and drapes and avoid plastic decorations that will just be thrown away afterwards. Rather opt for cloth decorations, or get creative with plants or other natural items. Decorations that can be used again, or adapted to make something useful, are ideal. Hiring decorations such as candleholders and tablecloths is cheaper than buying, and better for the environment.

Flowers can add a huge sum to your bill, especially if those flowers are imported from overseas. If you must have cut flowers, choose seasonal varieties grown locally. Potted flowers are a good option as guests can take them home afterwards as reminder of the event (if you want to be extra green, opt for "kitchen garden" plants such as herbs or veggies that can help people become more self sufficient).

VenueSource a venue that is committed to green principles, such as recycling their waste, using solar power, or making the best use of natural light. This won't cost you any more than another venue, and it will give you peace of mind.

Try to keep heating and lighting costs down by scheduling your event for the warmer months, if possible, and having it during daylight ours. Avoid a venue that has few windows, as electric light during the day is an unnecessary burden on the environment.

If possible, try to find a location that is central for the majority of your guests, and near public transport. During the certificate presentation, the FAA credited CSULA's program for preparing individuals to become some of today's finest aviation professionals. The presenter noted that "many CSULA graduates have gone on to become airport managers, Department of Homeland Security Agents as well as Federal Aviation Administration employees."
Keith Mew, faculty adviser of the University's Aviation Administration Program, said, "We are delighted to have received this honor. (August 25, 2011) — The ITT Corporation, on behalf of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) selected South Carolina Technology & Aviation Center (SCTAC) as a site to deploy Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) equipment. This equipment is part of the Surveillance and Broadcast Services (SBS) program, which is part of the FAA's next generation ATC technology and represents the first major step in the next generation of air traffic control. ADS-B equipment is a crucial component providing surveillance and situational awareness simultaneously to pilots and air traffic control facilities, and is designed to improve the safety, capacity and efficiency of the National Airspace System while providing a flexible expandable platform to accommodate oled technology on mobile phone future air traffic growth.
The ITT Corporation approached SCTAC as the site for the equipment as it serves the radar coverage from nearby Greenville-Spartanburg Airport. The installation of ADS-B equipment at SCTAC will benefit Greenville's air traffic services by assisting air traffic controllers in the tracking and movement of aircraft through the airspace. With ADS-B, both pilots and controllers can see radar-like displays of traffic — the displays update next to real-time and do not degrade with distance or terrain. But, where they have the attention of these large retailers is the ability to program these tablets to also capture their competitors pricing which provides them a true lowest price guarantee right at their fingertips.
Knowella Technologies, Inc. has been working on the concept of digital signage in this type of application for about three years. There is nothing they have not thought of when it comes to the idea of the "digital salesman" for these products while keeping the costs down to make the application practical to be adopted by large retailers. After spending some time looking at this product we learned a lot about how the retaile my photo and wallpaper rs use signage and all the discrepancies that are found in most large department stores. The biggest problem found in large department stores is the actual paper signage itself. It is not uncommon for retailers to change a product price two or three times a week for a product depending on their sales circulars that are released. Each price change requires someone to follow along in each store with those changes and reprint the paper signage to give to that department to be replaced on or before the new sales price date. At which point, it is printed and handed to the employees of that department to change the day of the sale. Large retailers that have thousands of stores across the nation and then thousands of products changing prices two or three times a week, gets very expensive quickly. Knowella has calculated that a large retailers chain of 1000 stores, wastes approximately 190,000 tons of paper each year. That is the equivalent of filling Yankee Stadium three times each year due to paper pricing changes. By using a low cost, low energy tablet in place of the paper signage, over time it will greatly impact the amount of paper waste in landfills.
This is all eliminated with their Knowella kiosk by easily programming the tablet to that manufacturers part number and securely mounting it to the product. (August 25, 2011) — The ITT Corporation, on behalf of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) selected South Carolina Technology & Aviation Center (SCTAC) as a site to deploy Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) equipment. This equipment is part of the Surveillance and Broadcast Services (SBS) program, which is part of the FAA's next generation ATC technology and represents the first major step in the next generation of air traffic control. ADS-B equipment is a crucial component providing surveillance and situational awareness simultaneously to pilots and air traffic control facilities, and is designed to improve the safety, capacity and efficiency of the National Airspace System while providing a flexible expandable platform to accommodate future air traffic growth.
The ITT Corporation approached SCTAC as the site for the equipment as it serves the radar coverage from nearby Greenville-Spartanburg Airport. The installation of ADS-B equipment at SCTAC will benefit Greenville's air traffic services by assisting air traffic controllers in the tracking and movement of aircraft through the airspace. With ADS-B, both pilots and controllers can see radar-like displays of traffic — the displays update next to real-time and do not degrade with distance or terrain. The system also gives pilots access to weather services and flight information services. The Emerging Wireless Infrastructure

Over time, Bluetooth wireless connectivity was added for convenience and connectivity to accessories. More recently, Wi-Fi has been integrated into most smartphones. The challenges inherent in integrating these technologies provide keys to planning and implementing new network designs.
Wi-Fi was originally envisioned by the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN architects as a convenient wireless replacement for cables in an Ethernet network wherein the Wi-Fi semiconductors could be powered by the PC's power supply or a laptop computers large battery. Power efficiency was not a primary factor in the original Wi-Fi architecture. So when Wi-FI chips designed for laptops are integrated into cell phones or smart phones, they tend to draw an undesirable amount of power from the small cell phone battery.
According to a report from UBM TechInsights, Bluetooth had achieved 100% adoption into handsets by 2010, and by 2010 Wi-Fi had achieved a 92% adoption rate. Wi-Fi growth was largely fostered by the use of single chip solutions integrating Wi-FI and Bluetooth with a 62% adoption rate by 2010. The aforementioned trends to increase Wi-Fi usage, and limitations of Wi-Fi in smartphones, have not gone un-noticed by the chipset manufacturers. In fact, the recent acquisition of wireless LAN chipset manufacturer Atheros by Qualcomm, the leading cellular chipset manufacturer, is positive affirmation of the need for the wireless LAN and cellular technologies to coexist and compliment one another. As stated by Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm, "It is Qualcomm's strategy to continually integrate additional technologies into mobile devices to make them the primary way that people communicate, compute and access content. This acquisition is a natural extension of that strategy into other types of devices." From these statements, it appears probable that the Atheros Wi-Fi chipset technology is going to be more thoroughly integrated into the handset, especially with regard to conservation of battery power and improved mobile performance. In the near future, smartphones and tablet computers will likely have "always-on" Wi-Fi capability, without as noticeable an impact on battery life. Additionally, Atheros has been a leader in integrated 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Wi-Fi chipsets, exploiting the 500 MHz of bandwidth available at 5 GHz versus the 80 MHz of bandwidth available at 2.4 GHz. So, although smartphones possess 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi at this time, very soon they will possess both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Wireless networking is not a matter of cellular or Wi-Fi, it is both technologies acting in concert. And, from the standpoint of building the wireless infrastructure, the designer needs to be cognizant of the fact that handsets, mobile computers, and other devices will imminently anticipate the availability of a robust, mission-critical cellular network and dual band Wi-Fi wireless LAN.

First Flagler County Teens-in-Flight Student Earns Private Pilot License
Palm Coast, FL – Teens-In-Flight is proud to announce Juan Rodriguez as their first student from Flagler County to earn his private pilot's license.
Juan Rodriguez first came to Teens-In-Flight in January, 2009 as a junior at Flagler Palm Coast High School. He was a member of the Junior Air Force ROTC. Today, he is an Embry Riddle Aeronautical University college student with his private pilot's license. The accomplishment has an $11,000 price tag. Juan didn't pay a dime, thanks to Teens-In-Flight.
"Juan was highly motivated to learn to fly," says Col. Jack D. Howell USMC (Ret), direct of the school. "He lived and breathed aviation," Col. Howell a oled technology on mobile phone dded. Juan's leadership stood out as the cadet commanding officer in his senior year. He was also very helpful in the Teens-In-Flight classroom with other students. For example, Col. Howell assigned two autistic students to Juan to assist when they needed help.
Juan excelled in the program's FAA ground school class his senior year. In July, 2010 he had his first solo ride. After the ride, Col. Howell cut the back of Juan's shirt, a tradition in the flight community.
Juan completed all the necessary paperwork and classes and was ready to take his 'checkride' when he got caught in a snag. On his first set of FAA paperwork, Juan spelled out his middle name, however, on the second form, he only put his middle initial. With all paperwork required to be the same, they flagged him and he was then caught in a 'paper war' as Col. Howell describes. During the same time, under Col. Howell's tutoring, Juan was accepted into Embry Riddle, along with another Teens-In-Flight student, Gloria king. The paperwork was taken care of, and they both started in fall of 2010.
The test consists of a written exam and a flight exam. Col. Howell started preparing Juan in the spring to take the flight portion of exam. Juan would need his checkride, administered by a pilot examiner (the examiner gave Juan's test pro bono), to show that you indeed know how to fly a plane. The same day, the same examiner would administer a rigorous two-hour verbal exam. Juan would have to plan a cross-country flight, as well as take the flight. He passed both portions with 'flying colors'.
Juan Rodriguez and Gloria King have another accomplishment to be proud of. When they were seniors at Flagler Palm Coast High School, they were awarded Congressional Nominations from U.S. Congressman John Mica. "I see a bright future for both these young leaders," said Col Howell. "Teens-In-Flight is fortunate to be able to guide my photo and wallpaper these students toward their goals and help them to become contributing members of society," he added.
Teens-In-Flight is a 501(C) 3 foundation formed to support the families of our military. Through the modem of aerospace education we open the doors of opportunity.
